The Waterhouse at South Bund by NHDRO Architects
An embodiment of strength resounds within the concrete and bricks of the Waterhouse on the South Bund hotel in Shanghai, Japan. The unused space was redesigned by Chinese architects NHDRO transforming the once desolate and abandoned army headquarters into a space of elegance and prestige. It consists of nineteen rent-able rooms spread through the four storeys and a roof-terrace overlooking the Huangpu River. A presence of the industrial past of the working dock resides within the context of the Cor-ten steel built over the existing structure. Interaction between private and public spaces open up from the quaint invitations of views of the large vertical room window above the reception desk and the corridor windows overlooking the dining room.
