It's hard not to be number one with such a surname. Although Aalto is meant to be at the pantheon of the greatest architects of 20th century, he somehow, suspiciously doesn't belong there. He's totally not from the list of heroes. Of course, he's modernist, but not the aggressive one. Nobody else respected the environment, antiquities, nature as much as Aalto did. But at the same time his works were not timidly "fitted" into the environment, but built bravely and confidently. Aalto wasn't a supporter of any style, he didn't issue any manifestos, didn't fight with anyone. He loved life: women, humour, fishing. And said that his destination was not reorganization, but organization of that wonderful world. Or improvement of it. This is where his design masterpieces and the masterpiece-producing company with the brisk name "Artec" came from. Aalto lived - as all wise men are supposed to do - a long life. Tried all genres: house, temple, university, office building, etc. And in every piece of work he was incredibly responsive and gentle with the world.
